Many people have considered gardening therapeutic. We recognized the positive effect it can have on patients particularly our older clients. Because we are in the middle of spring and are going to the start of summer soon, let us talk about gardening.
You have to do a lot of activities in order to cultivate your garden. A lot of these activities give our older adults joy. Such of which are:
Digging allows you to connect yourself with the earth and know the soil you are stepping on. It gives you various insights and can keep a person grounded.
Our gardens are not considered gardens if not for the plants in it. The act of planting does not only involve burying a seed. There are a whole bunch of techniques like grafting, budding, etc. just to grow new plants.
Of course, this also gives you more knowledge about the plants you are planting yourself. May it be a flowering plant or a fruit-bearing one; you are appreciating the uniqueness and beauty of Mother Nature herself.
Caring for your garden includes watering it and providing it with enough nutrients so that it can give you the finest fruits. Watering is your interaction with your children that is your plants.
- Harvesting flowers and fruits
With all the effort, time and resources being poured down just to make your plants grow, it is a joy when you finally reap your harvest. Aside from that, you can sell it, decorate your house with it or simply consume it.
Other than the mentioned benefits and wonders of gardening, did we not mention that it can also be a therapeutic activity for our war heroes? Memorial Day is the time we get to celebrate the heroic acts of those who have perished during war.
But let us not limit it to those who have gone to the other side. We should also look after those who have survived the war. After all, it is their friends and buddies who have made their trip to the next life.
Gardening proves to be a therapeutic activity for those who want to forget the horrors they have experienced during war. Their retirement should only be filled with peace. Helping them find a new hobby is one way we can repay them. Let us bring peace back once again to their lives.
Retiring does not have to be all sitting and lying down. You can still have a goal. You can travel to places, make things you had never made before like arts and craft, get yourself a new hobby and much more.
